When it comes to horse riding, selecting the right saddle is paramount. A well-chosen saddle not only ensures a comfortable riding experience for both the horse and the rider but also contributes to safety and longevity. In this guide, we'll explore the key factors that make a good horse saddle and address common queries such as the safest saddle, the consideration of an adjustable saddle, and the lifespan of a quality saddle.
The foundation of a good horse saddle lies in its design, materials, and craftsmanship. One brand that stands out in the world of equestrian gear is DP Saddlery. Their commitment to quality is evident in models like the DP Saddlery Quantum Western 1215, crafted with precision for Western riding enthusiasts.
A good saddle should provide proper support and balance, distributing the rider's weight evenly. Look for quality leather that is not only durable but also breathable, ensuring the horse remains comfortable during extended rides. The Quantum Short & Light 1214 from DP Saddlery is an excellent example, designed for those seeking a lighter yet sturdy option.

DP Saddlery Quantum with Dressage Flap 1084 is a good example of this and offers adaptability without compromising on performance. Adjustable saddles are an excellent option to accommodate different horses or changes in the horse's physique over time.

Discovering the Allure of Exotic Print Boots: A Stylish Fusion of Fashion and Durability
In the vast landscape of footwear fashion, exotic print boots have emerged as a popular choice, seamlessly blending style and rugged appeal. These boots, adorned with captivating patterns that replicate the look of exotic animal skins, offer a unique fashion statement while being crafted from high quality cowhide leather.
What Defines Exotic Print Boots?
Exotic print boots stand out as a trendy alternative to traditional leather boots. While genuine exotic leather boots are typically crafted from the hides of animals like alligators, pythons, or ostriches, exotic print boots recreate the exotic appearance using cowhide leather. This material not only provides durability but is more cost effective than exotic skins.
Materials and Craftsmanship
The distinctive feature of exotic print boots lies in their use of cowhide leather to mimic the texture and appearance of real exotic skins. Brands such as Cowtown, Ferrini and Dan Post have mastered the art of replicating the unique patterns found in nature, offering alternatives that are both stylish and durable.
For example, the Cowtown Ladies' Ostrich Print Wide Square Toe Boots Q464 showcase a stunning ostrich print without the use of real ostrich leather. The same holds true for the Cowtown Men's Ostrich Print Square or Rounded Toe Boots Q6064, R6064, providing a masculine and fashionable alternative without compromising on quality.
Durability of Exotic Print Boots
A common concern when it comes to fashion footwear is durability. Thankfully, exotic print boots, with their foundation in cowhide leather, are designed for longevity. The use of high-quality materials ensures that these boots can withstand the rigors of daily wear, making them a durable and practical choice.
Take, for instance, the Ferrini Men's Mustang Alligator Print Square Toe Boots 40793-10, which exemplify not only a rugged design but also durability that can endure various environments, from city streets to outdoor adventures.
Water Resistance: Addressing the Element of Concern
A crucial factor in assessing any pair of boots is their water resistance. Exotic print boots, with their cowhide leather construction, typically exhibit water-resistant properties. While it's essential to follow care instructions provided by the manufacturer, many exotic print boots are designed to be water-resistant to some extent, enhancing their versatility for wear in different weather conditions.
Affordability Without Compromising Style
One of the significant advantages of opting for exotic print boots lies in their affordability. Genuine exotic leather can be costly due to the rarity of these materials. Exotic print boots, crafted from cowhide leather, offer a more budget-friendly option without compromising on style.
Consider the Cowtown Men's Rustic Caiman Print Square Toe Boots Q6150 and the Cowtown Men's Oryx Caiman Belly Print Square Toe Boots Q6153, showcasing distinctive caiman alligator prints at a fraction of the cost of genuine caiman leather boots.
Many Exotic Boots are Banned in California
Alligator and Crocodile, Caiman, Lizard and Python boots, are banned for import or sale in California, so the only other alternative with these exotics is to buy the more affordable, durable look-a-like exotic print boots.

]]>Are Saddles One Size Fits All?
Introduction
The equestrian world is a realm of finesse and unity between rider and horse, and at its core lies a crucial factor – saddle fit. Amidst the array of saddle options available today, one question prevails: does one-size-fits-all apply to saddles and horses? This article seeks to unravel the truth behind saddle compatibility, delving into the intricacies of saddle sizing and its paramount importance for both equine and rider performance.
Are There Different Saddle Sizes?
Variety is the hallmark of saddle sizes, tailored to accommodate the diverse spectrum of horse conformation. One saddle doesn't fit all – a saddle well-suited for a robust Quarter Horse may not provide the same level of comfort to a lithe Thoroughbred. Manufacturers recognize this diversity and offer an array of tree widths and lengths. Among these, DP Saddlery offers a range of options such as the DP Saddlery Quantum Short & Light Western 1216 and the DP Saddlery Quantum Western 1215, each catering to distinct equine builds.
How Do I Know What Size Saddle to Get for My Horse?
Unraveling the mystery of selecting the right saddle size for your horse involves more than just intuition. The saddle's foundation, the tree size, is a pivotal factor in ensuring the horse's comfort and well-being during rides. Different breeds and body types necessitate specific tree sizes to facilitate balanced weight distribution and unhindered movement.
If I get The Wrong Size, Can It Affect My Horse?
The notion that any saddle can be universally applied to any horse is far from reality. Placing an ill-fitting saddle on a horse can yield discomfort, pain, and even long-term health repercussions. Imagine donning shoes that are either too tight or too loose – the analogy applies to saddles. An excessively narrow saddle may pinch the horse's withers, while an overly wide one can trigger pressure points and impede free movement.
Choosing the Right Saddle Size for the Rider
Saddle fit extends its influence to the rider's experience as well. A saddle of appropriate dimensions ensures the rider's equilibrium and posture, facilitating effective communication with the horse. When selecting a saddle for yourself, factors such as seat size, leg length, and riding discipline come into play. Consider the DP Saddlery Classic Dressage 3350 for a comfortable and tailored rider's fit for Dressage.
Conclusion
In the pursuit of equestrian excellence, the saddle emerges as a pivotal determinant. Recognizing that not all saddles universally accommodate every horse is the initial step toward prioritizing both equine and rider welfare. Dedicate the time to accurately assess your horse's dimensions, explore the range of saddle sizes available, and factor in your own comfort. With the array of choices, including the DP Saddlery Quantum series, you can confidently forge an informed decision, ensuring a harmonious and productive equestrian journey. Remember, a well-fitted saddle isn't merely a seat – it's a conduit connecting rider and horse, elevating your equestrian voyage to unparalleled heights.
]]>One of the first considerations when selecting a horse saddle is its intended purpose. Are you primarily planning to trail ride, compete in dressage, or engage in Western-style riding? Each discipline has specific saddle requirements to optimize performance and rider comfort. Therefore, identifying your riding goals and the activities you'll be participating in is crucial in determining the most suitable saddle for your needs.
The material of the saddle is another important aspect to consider. Saddles are typically made from leather or synthetic materials. Leather saddles are known for their durability, comfort, and traditional appeal. They mold to the rider's body over time, providing a customized fit. Synthetic saddles, on the other hand, are often lighter in weight, easier to maintain, and can be more affordable. They are a popular choice for those who prioritize convenience and budget.
Fit and comfort are paramount when selecting a saddle. An ill-fitting saddle can lead to discomfort, pain, and even injury for both you and your horse. To ensure a proper fit, it's essential to consult with a knowledgeable saddle fitter or seek guidance from an experienced professional. They can assess your horse's conformation and recommend the appropriate saddle size and style. A well-fitted saddle will distribute the rider's weight evenly and provide sufficient clearance for the withers and spine, allowing your horse to move freely and comfortably.
Now, let's address a common question: How much does a horse saddle cost? The cost of a horse saddle can vary widely depending on factors such as brand, material, craftsmanship, and customization options. Entry-level saddles can range from around $200 to $500, while high-end, custom-made saddles can cost several thousand dollars. It's important to find the right balance between quality and affordability, ensuring that the saddle meets your specific requirements without exceeding your budget.
If you're curious about the saddles used by cowboys in the past, the Western saddle stands out as the most iconic. Designed for durability and stability during long hours of riding and working cattle, the Western saddle features a sturdy tree, high pommel, and deep seat. It often showcases decorative tooling and leatherwork, reflecting the individual style and preferences of the cowboy.

Western cowboy boots have long captured the spirit of the American West, evoking images of rugged cowboys and wide-open landscapes. With their distinctive design and rich history, these boots continue to be a popular footwear choice for both fashion enthusiasts and working cowboys alike. In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of Western cowboy boots, discussing their key features, the difference between cowboy boots and western boots, the significance of width measurements, whether to tuck jeans in, and even explore the boots worn by Rip in the hit series Yellowstone. Let's kick things off!
I. What is the difference between Cowboy boots and Western boots? When it comes to cowboy boots and western boots, the terms are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. Cowboy boots typically feature a taller shaft, reaching mid-calf, while western boots have a shorter shaft that stops above the ankle. Furthermore, cowboy boots often boast a pointed toe, while western boots may sport a round or square toe. Understanding these distinctions can help you make an informed choice when selecting the perfect pair.
II. Boot widths and their meanings: When it comes to width measurements, make sure to find the perfect fit. Cowboy boots are offered in various widths to accommodate different foot sizes and shapes. The letter "D" represents a standard or medium width, while "EE" indicates a wider fit. It's important to choose the appropriate width to ensure optimal comfort and a proper fit. Explore brands like Dan Post Men's Winston Lizard Square Toe Boot DP3050R and Durango Santa Fe Derby Brown Leather Square Toe Boot DDB0408 that offer different width options, allowing you to find the perfect pair.
III. Now, let's talk about styling cowboy boots with jeans. Tucking jeans into the shaft of your boots is a classic choice that adds to the Western charm. It creates a clean, streamlined look that highlights the boots and their unique design. If you're looking to showcase your cowboy boots, consider opting for this timeless style. However, if you prefer a more casual approach, wearing your jeans over the boots can still create a stylish and relaxed look. The choice between tucking or not ultimately depends on your personal preference and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.
IV. What boots does Rip wear in Yellowstone? For fans of the popular TV series Yellowstone, the boots worn by Rip Wheeler have become iconic. Rip's boots, known as Lucchese Classics, exude Western authenticity and quality craftsmanship. While Rip's exact boots may be highly sought after, there are other options available that can help you capture that Yellowstone-inspired look. When it comes to eventing, choosing the right saddle is paramount for both rider performance and horse comfort. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the world of eventing saddles, unveiling their unique features and aiding you in making an informed decision. We'll also address common questions, such as the type of saddle used in eventing, the distinction between jumping and eventing saddles, the suitability of all-purpose saddles for eventing, and the saddles preferred by Olympic riders. Let's embark on this equestrian journey and discover the secrets of eventing saddles!
Eventing saddles, specifically designed for the demands of the discipline, are predominantly utilized in eventing. These saddles offer stability, balance, and security throughout all three eventing phases: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Featuring a forward-cut flap to accommodate shorter stirrup lengths required for jumping, eventing saddles enable riders to maintain a secure position during high-speed activities like cross-country riding.
Jumping saddles and eventing saddles share similarities but have distinct purposes. Jumping saddles primarily cater to show jumping, emphasizing a secure and balanced position while maneuvering fences. With a more forward flap and often a deeper seat, jumping saddles support the rider's position during jumps.
Eventing saddles, on the other hand, offer versatility, making them suitable for all three eventing phases. These saddles strike a balance between dressage, cross-country, and show jumping requirements. They feature a forward-cut flap for shorter stirrups during jumping, while still providing the necessary support and balance for dressage work. Eventing saddles allow riders to maintain a secure position while facilitating the freedom of movement essential in cross-country riding.
Although all-purpose saddles may suffice for casual riders, dedicated eventing competitors are encouraged to invest in specialized eventing saddles. All-purpose saddles aim to provide a compromise between dressage and jumping disciplines. While they offer a certain level of versatility, they may not deliver the optimal support, balance, or security required for the rigorous demands of eventing.

Introduction:
When you think of the American West, one image that often comes to mind is a pair of sturdy and stylish cowboy boots. These boots have become synonymous with the cowboy lifestyle, representing both ruggedness and fashion. However, have you ever wondered about the origins of cowboy boots and how they have evolved over time? In this article, we'll delve into the rich history of cowboy boots, exploring their inception, cultural significance, and enduring popularity.
Who Created the First Cowboy Boot?
The story of cowboy boots dates back to the early 19th century, when American cowboys roamed the vast expanses of the Wild West. While it's challenging to pinpoint a single individual responsible for inventing the first cowboy boot, it is believed that early designs were influenced by various cultural influences, including the Mexican vaqueros and European riding boots. These pioneers needed footwear that could withstand the demanding tasks of herding cattle, riding horses, and braving harsh terrains.
When and Where Were Cowboy Boots Invented?
The exact time and place of cowboy boot invention remain somewhat ambiguous, but their rise in popularity can be traced to the mid-1800s in the United States. As cattle ranching and cowboy culture flourished in the American West, the need for durable and comfortable boots became paramount. Craftsmen began producing boots specifically designed to meet the demands of cowboys, featuring distinct characteristics that set them apart from other types of footwear.
Why Do Mexicans Wear Pointed Cowboy Boots?
One intriguing aspect of cowboy boots is the variety of styles and designs that have emerged over time. One such variation is the pointed toe, which has become particularly popular in Mexican cowboy boot styles. The pointed boots often sport intricate stitching patterns, exotic leathers, and bold colors, creating a unique aesthetic. While there are various theories, the pointed toe is believed to have originated from Spanish influence during the colonial period and the Mexican vaquero traditions.
Why Are Mexican Cowboy Boots So Pointy?
The distinctive pointy toe of Mexican cowboy boots serves both functional and symbolic purposes. Functionally, the pointed toe allows the rider's foot to easily slide into the stirrup, providing a secure grip during horseback riding. Symbolically, the elongated toe is considered a status symbol, reflecting the wearer's sense of style, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. Over time, this unique feature has become synonymous with Mexican cowboy boots and continues to captivate boot enthusiasts worldwide.
As the history of cowboy boots unfolds, it becomes evident that they have transcended their original purpose as practical work boots. Today, cowboy boots are cherished not only for their durability and functionality but also for their fashion-forward appeal. This weekend I was grooming, or trying to, as the equine in question finds the whole process rather tiresome. Hence we spend a lot of time going backwards and forwards, sideways and generally having multiple face-offs as he turns into a giraffe. My pleas that he should enjoy the experience fall on deaf ears!
Then, it happened. It happens every year so it really should not be a shock. There I was, grooming away, scraping the hair off the dandy brush every so often when I glanced at the ground.
All around us were those clumps of hair that come off the afore-mentioned dandy brush. Nearly enough to stuff a sofa. And of course, what was I wearing? Yup - a fleece fabric top. All equestrians will share my pain I’m sure! I left my home earlier that day reasonably clean and tidy and came back looking like a yeti.
Ah yes – all hail the unmistakable arrival of shedding season. Utter joy for anyone who has allergies or hayfever. It might still be baltic outside but hey – “let’s start shedding our winter coats” think our equine friends. Which seems bit odd given that for this blog writer, here in the UK we haven’t packed away our winter clothing and snow shovels just yet. But hey ho, it always seems to be this way.
So I started to ponder why do horses cast at all?
Well, our magnificent furry friends, just like us, need to cast their hair to replace old or damaged hair. Also, they usually instinctively grow a thicker coat for winter and then cast to reveal a lighter one for summer. I find this fascinating. One of my equine chums goes from very dark bay in the winter to glorious reddish bay in the summer. Two horses for the price of one! Its not uncommon for people to not recognise him from one season to the next.
Then of course when it starts to get colder, the hair will start to grow in much thicker again. And so the cycle goes on….
Of course, they can also cast their hair due to environmental factors, such as temperature changes. In the winter, horses grow a thicker coat to keep warm, but as the weather begins to warm up, they will shed this coat to stay cool. Similarly, horses may cast their hair in response to dry or humid conditions. In dry conditions, horses may shed their hair to conserve moisture, while in humid conditions, they may shed their hair to release excess heat.
Health and dietary issues may also affect their shedding. For example, horses that are undernourished or deficient in certain vitamins or minerals may have a weakened immune system, which can lead to hair loss. Similarly, horses that are suffering from certain skin conditions, such as mange or ringworm, may experience excessive hair loss as a result of the condition.
Cushing's disease, the hormonal disorder that affects horses, is caused by a dysfunction of the pituitary gland, which produces an excess amount of hormones that affect various bodily functions, including metabolism, immune response, and hair growth. Horses with Cushing's disease may exhibit a variety of symptoms, such as a long and curly coat, excessive sweating, increased thirst and urination, weight loss, and a weakened immune system. It is important for horse owners to seek veterinary care if they suspect their horse may have Cushing's disease, as early diagnosis and treatment can help to manage the symptoms and improve the horse's quality of life.
In some cases, horses may also cast their hair due to stress. Horses that are anxious, nervous, or experiencing a change in environment may begin to shed their hair as a coping mechanism. This is known as psychogenic alopecia.
Shedding is a perfectly natural process for horses, but there are some things we can do to help them. Regular grooming (even if they object) is essential to maintain a healthy coat and to help remove the loose hair. This can be done by using a soft-bristled brush or curry comb, which will help to remove any loose hair or dirt from their coat. And don’t forget - a balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals can help to promote healthy hair growth and reduce the risk of hair loss due to dietary deficiencies.
In conclusion, horses cast their hair for several reasons, including the natural hair growth cycle, environmental factors, health issues, and stress. While shedding is a natural process, we can help our horses through this process by providing regular grooming, a balanced diet, and a healthy living environment. By taking these simple steps, we can help them maintain a healthy and beautiful coat of hair. So they can look gorgeous whilst their owner goes home from the yard looking like a yeti...

And for you - ditch the fleece for now and check out some of these jackets!

BlackJack: The Riderless Horse
Black Jack was a horse of incredible courage and service, known for his unwavering commitment to his duty. His story, like many of the horses who served in the military, is one of loyalty, sacrifice, and bravery. But what makes Black Jack's story unique is that he also served as a symbol of honor and respect, as the riderless horse at countless military funerals.
Black Jack's journey began in 1947, when he was foaled in the United States Army's Remount Service. He was a sturdy and dependable horse, with a calm and steady demeanor that made him an ideal choice for military service. Black Jack was initially trained as a packhorse and then later as a riding horse. His handlers quickly recognized his potential and he was soon transferred to the United States Army Caisson Platoon, the unit responsible for providing funeral honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The picture below was taken at the Washington D.C. White House Drive on November 25 1963.
Black Jack's duties as a caisson horse were not easy. He would pull the caisson, a wagon that carried the casket of the deceased, through the winding roads of the cemetery. The caisson was a solemn and dignified mode of transport, and Black Jack had to maintain his composure at all times, even as he was surrounded by mourners and the sounds of taps. Despite the weight of his responsibilities, Black Jack always remained calm and steadfast, earning the respect and admiration of all who saw him.
But it was Black Jack's role as the riderless horse that made him a legend. The riderless horse is a tradition that dates back to ancient times, when a warrior's horse would be led behind his coffin as a symbol of his final journey. In modern times, the riderless horse is a powerful symbol of the fallen soldier, representing the soldier who will ride no more.
Black Jack served as the riderless horse at countless funerals, including that of President John F. Kennedy. In 1963, Black Jack was draped in a black saddle blanket with Kennedy's initials embroidered in gold. His boots were reversed in the stirrups, a tradition that dates back to the Napoleonic Wars. As Black Jack walked solemnly behind the caisson, his dignified and stoic presence captured the attention of the world. He was a symbol of respect, not just for Kennedy, but for all who had served their country. The picture below is Mrs. Kennedy in Virginia in 1968.
Black Jack retired in 1973, after more than 20 years of service to the military. He lived out the remainder of his days on a farm in Maryland. Today, Black Jack's legacy lives on, not just as a symbol of the fallen soldier, but as a testament to the incredible courage and dedication of all the horses who have served in the military.
In conclusion, Black Jack was not just a horse, but a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice made by those who have served their country. His legacy will always be remembered as a true embodiment of duty, honor, and respect. The riderless horse tradition will continue to be carried out with the same reverence and solemnity as Black Jack did for so many years. Black Jack was a true American hero, and his story will always be an inspiration.
What is a Gaited Horse?
A gaited horse is a horse breed that is known for its smooth, natural four-beat gait. This gait is unique to gaited horses and is different from the typical two-beat trot of other horse breeds. Gaited horses have been selectively bred for this gait, and it is a natural characteristic that is passed down from generation to generation.
There are several breeds of gaited horses, including the Tennessee Walking Horse, the Missouri Fox Trotter, and the Paso Fino. Each breed has its own distinct characteristics and gait, but they all share the smooth, natural four-beat gait that sets them apart from other horse breeds.
What Kind of Saddle Should You Look for When Riding a Gaited Horse?
When it comes to riding a gaited horse, it's important to choose the right saddle. A saddle that is designed for a trotting horse may not be comfortable or suitable for a gaited horse. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a saddle for a gaited horse:
The saddle tree is the foundation of the saddle and determines its fit and comfort. When it comes to gaited horse saddles, it's important to choose a saddle with a tree that is specifically designed for gaited horses. These trees are typically flatter and wider than traditional saddle trees, which allows for more freedom of movement in the horse's shoulders and back.
A lightweight and balanced saddle is important for gaited horses, as it allows for more freedom of movement and less strain on the horse's back. Look for a saddle that is made from lightweight materials and is designed to distribute weight evenly across the horse's back.
Gaited horses have a shorter back than other horse breeds, which means that a saddle with a longer skirt may cause discomfort or rubs. Look for a saddle with a shorter skirt that is designed to fit the contours of a gaited horse's back.
A padded and wide gullet helps to distribute weight evenly across the horse's back and provide comfort and support. Look for a saddle with a padded seat and wide gullet that is designed to fit the contours of a gaited horse's back.
In Conclusion
Gaited horses are a unique breed that require a specialized saddle for optimal comfort and performance. When choosing a saddle for a gaited horse, it's important to look for a saddle with a tree that is specifically designed for gaited horses, is lightweight and balanced, has a short skirt, and is padded and wide in the gullet. By choosing the right saddle, you can help ensure that your gaited horse is comfortable, healthy, and performing at its best.

It’s a controversial topic we’re looking at today. Horseback hunting. This particular blog writer is based in the UK, where hunting foxes (and other wild mammals) with dogs was banned in 2005. The ban came about because of growing opposition to the sport and concerns about its treatment of the animals and the safety of riders and protestors.
As well as the animal welfare aspect, several more reasons make it controversial. These include cultural and regional differences as well as issues around land use and wildlife management. Those who are for hunting argue that it’s an important rural tradition, whilst opponents argue it's cruel and absolutely unnecessary.
Other forms of fox control have since been introduced but they have also faced opposition and calls for stricter regulation.
In the United States, hunting is generally viewed as a legitimate form of wildlife management and recreation, although some forms of hunting, such as trophy hunting, have faced criticism from animal welfare groups and the general public. Horseback hunting is regulated by state wildlife agencies, and the rules and regulations vary depending on the state and the species being hunted.
So how did it all begin?
In the UK – it actually dates back to the 16th century in England, when it was a popular pastime among the landed gentry. By the 18th and 19th centuries, it had evolved further with the formation of hunt clubs and the establishment of formal rules and procedures.
Originally, it was used to control the populations of foxes, which were seen as a threat to livestock. Over time, it became less about practical pest control and more about the sport and social aspects of the pursuit.
It then became popular in other countries too, including the United States, where it was introduced in the colonial era. Despite these controversies, horseback hunting remains a popular sport with hunters riding in pursuit of foxes, stags, and other game. When it comes to the horses, modern hunting often involves the use of specialized breeds, such as Thoroughbreds, which are of course, bred for speed, endurance, and athleticism.
Hunting methods
In the UK, where fox hunting is the most common form of horseback hunting, it often involves large packs of hounds and a large group of riders. In the US, horseback hunting is often done on a smaller scale, with one or a few riders pursuing game such as deer, elk, or coyotes and is seen as a recreational activity that can also serve a practical purpose, such as controlling populations of wild game that may be damaging crops or property.
Horse tack for hunting
When it comes to tack, the essentials are much the same as other equine pursuits.
Saddles and bridles are generally more specialized in the UK, where the sport is more established and has a longer history. In the US, hunting gear is often less specialized, with many riders using gear that is also suitable for other equestrian activities.
Saddles: for hunting this is typically a close-contact saddle, which allows the rider to have a more secure seat on the horse. They often have a deep seat and long flaps, which provide more stability and support while jumping obstacles.
Bridles: hunting bridles are usually a simple design, with a plain snaffle bit and a plain or slightly raised noseband. Although some people prefer a more robust bit for hunting – depending how eager the horse is…
Summary
Hunting has become subject to more control in recent years and some may view this as a hindrance, but it is ultimately a positive development. The additional regulations and restrictions ensure that horse hunting is conducted in a safe and responsible manner, both for the horses and for the individuals involved in the activity. By implementing these measures, the horse hunting community can help to preserve the long-term viability of the sport and do their bit to ensure that it remains a sustainable and ethical pursuit.
]]>Flies and other biting insects can be a nuisance for both horses and their owners, and can cause a range of health problems, including skin irritation, allergies, and even infections. Fly protection gear, including fly sheets, masks, and sprays, can help protect horses from these pests and keep them healthy and comfortable. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of fly protection gear for horses.
First and foremost, fly protection gear can help prevent a range of health issues that can be caused by flies and other biting insects. Flies can transmit diseases and parasites, and their bites can cause skin irritation and allergies. For horses with sensitive skin, bites from flies can lead to painful open sores that can take a long time to heal. In addition, some horses are particularly susceptible to insect bites and can develop severe allergic reactions, known as sweet itch, that can cause intense itching, hair loss, and scabs. Fly protection gear can help prevent these health issues by creating a barrier between the horse and the insects.
In addition to protecting horses from bites and diseases, fly protection gear can also help reduce stress and discomfort. Flies can be a constant source of irritation for horses, leading to restlessness, stomping, and even aggression. By providing a barrier between the horse and the insects, fly protection gear can help horses feel more relaxed and comfortable, allowing them to focus on their work or leisure activities.
Another important reason to use fly protection gear is to prevent damage to the horse’s coat and skin. Flies and other insects can cause horses to rub or scratch themselves in an effort to relieve itching or irritation. This can lead to hair loss, skin abrasions, and even infections. Fly sheets and masks can help prevent horses from rubbing or scratching themselves, protecting their coats and skin.
Fly protection gear can also be particularly important for horses that are sensitive to sunlight or have light-colored coats. These horses are more susceptible to sunburn and skin damage, and the use of fly sheets and masks with UV protection can help reduce the risk of these issues. Additionally, some fly sheets and masks are designed to be breathable and lightweight, which can help keep horses cool and comfortable in hot weather.
It’s important to note that not all fly protection gear is created equal, and it’s important to choose gear that is appropriate for your horse’s needs. For example, some horses may be more sensitive to certain materials or fabrics, and may require gear made from natural or hypoallergenic materials. Additionally, it’s important to choose gear that is the right size and fit for your horse, to ensure that it provides adequate protection without causing discomfort or rubbing.
Fly protection gear can come in a variety of forms, including fly sheets, fly masks, fly boots, and fly sprays. Fly sheets and masks are perhaps the most popular forms of fly protection gear, and can provide full-body coverage for horses. Fly boots are another option, designed to protect the lower legs and pasterns from flies and other insects. Fly sprays can also be effective in repelling insects, but should be used with caution, as some horses may be sensitive to the chemicals in the spray.
In conclusion, fly protection gear is an important part of horse care, helping to prevent a range of health issues, reduce stress and discomfort, and protect the horse’s coat and skin. When choosing fly protection gear, it’s important to consider your horse’s individual needs and to select gear that provides adequate protection without causing discomfort. With the right gear, horses can enjoy a comfortable and healthy summer, free from the annoyance and potential health risks of flies and other biting insects.
The earliest known saddle pads were made from animal hides and were used by ancient civilizations such as the Persians and Greeks. These early saddle pads were designed to protect the horse’s back from the weight and pressure of the saddle, as well as to absorb sweat and prevent chafing. They were typically made from sheepskin or cowhide, and were often decorated with intricate designs and symbols.
In the Middle Ages, saddle pads became more sophisticated as knights began to use them in battle. The increased speed and agility of war horses led to the development of saddle pads with raised edges, which helped to keep the saddle in place during battle. These pads were often made from wool or felt, and were sometimes reinforced with leather or metal.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, saddle pads began to be used more widely by equestrians, and the design of saddle pads became more varied. Some saddle pads were designed to provide additional cushioning for the horse’s back, while others were made from lightweight materials for use during racing or other high-speed events.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, saddle pads became more specialized for different equestrian disciplines. For example, dressage saddle pads were designed to be longer and more contoured to fit the shape of the dressage saddle, while western saddle pads were often made from sheepskin or felt and were designed to fit the shape of the western saddle.
The materials used to make saddle pads have also evolved over time. Early saddle pads were made from animal hides, wool, and felt. In the 20th century, synthetic materials such as foam and neoprene began to be used in the construction of saddle pads. These materials were lightweight, durable, and provided excellent cushioning and shock absorption.
Today, there is a wide range of saddle pads available on the market, each designed for a specific purpose. Some saddle pads are designed to provide additional cushioning and support for the horse’s back, while others are designed to wick away sweat and prevent chafing. There are even saddle pads with built-in pockets for gel inserts or air cushions to provide additional comfort and shock absorption.
In addition to their functional uses, saddle pads have also become a fashion statement in the equestrian world. Many riders choose saddle pads in a variety of colors and designs to match their riding outfits or to reflect their personal style.
In conclusion, horse saddle pads have a long and fascinating history, and their evolution has been shaped by the needs of riders and the development of new materials and technologies. Today, saddle pads are an essential piece of riding equipment, providing comfort, protection, and style for both horse and rider.
]]>Now, I know you're thinking, "What difference does the toe shape make?" Well, let me tell you, the shape of the toe can make all the difference in the world. It can either make you look like a seasoned cowboy or like a city slicker who got lost on the way to the rodeo. So pay close attention, because I'm about to give you the lowdown on the different toe shapes and what they say about you.
First up, we have the classic round toe. This toe shape is for the traditionalist. It says that you value classic style and comfort over trends. The round toe is perfect for men who are looking for a classic cowboy look that will never go out of style.
Next, we have the pointed toe. This toe shape is for the daring and adventurous. It says that you're not afraid to take risks and that you're always up for a good time. The pointed toe is perfect for men who want to make a statement with their footwear.
And finally, we have the square toe. This toe shape is for the man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. The square toe is for the man who is confident in his own skin and isn't afraid to stand out from the crowd.
Now, you might be wondering, "What if I don't fit into any of these categories?" Well, that's where the hybrid toe shapes come in. The hybrid toe shapes are for the men who are a little bit of everything. They are for the men who value classic style, love taking risks, and are confident in their own skin.
So, now that you know the different toe shapes, how do you decide which one is right for you? Well, it all comes down to personal preference. If you love classic style, go for the round toe. If you're always up for a good time, go for the pointed toe. And if you're confident in your own skin, go for the square toe.
And just because you choose one toe shape, doesn't mean you can't switch it up every once in a while. Feel free to mix and match and find the toe shape that best suits your mood and style. Just remember to have fun with it and wear your cowboy boots with confidence.
In conclusion, the shape of the toe may seem like a small detail, but it can make all the difference in the world. So, next time you're in the market for a pair of cowboy boots, don't just settle for any pair. Take a moment to think about the shape of the toe and choose the one that best represents you. And remember, the most important thing is to wear your cowboy boots with confidence and a smile, no matter what toe shape you choose.
]]>The first cowboy boots were created in the late 1800s, when cowboys were starting to make their mark on the American West. They were designed with functionality in mind, as cowboys needed a sturdy and durable boot that could withstand the rigors of life on the trail. These early cowboy boots were made from leather and featured a high shaft that provided additional support and protection for the ankle, as well as a pointed toe that made it easier to slip into stirrups.
One of the key reasons cowboy boots became such an important part of cowboy culture is their versatility. On the one hand, they are rugged and tough, perfect for life on the trail and for handling heavy loads. On the other hand, they are stylish and eye-catching, making them a natural choice for rodeos and other events where cowboys wanted to show off their skills and sense of style.
Another important factor in the popularity of cowboy boots is the cultural significance they carry. Cowboy boots are often seen as a symbol of the American West, representing the hard-working and independent spirit of the people who lived and worked in that region. They are also a symbol of the unique blend of ruggedness and sophistication that is often associated with cowboys and their lifestyle.
When it comes to the design of cowboy boots, there are countless options available, from classic leather styles to more elaborate and decorative designs. Some of the most popular features of cowboy boots include intricate stitching, tooled leather, and metal embellishments such as stars, horseshoes, and other western-themed designs. There are also a variety of colors and finishes to choose from, making it possible to find a pair of cowboy boots that perfectly fits your personal style.
One of the best things about cowboy boots is their comfort and durability. They are often made from high-quality leather that is both soft and tough, making them perfect for all-day wear. The high shaft and pointed toe also help to provide additional support and stability, making cowboy boots ideal for a wide range of activities, from riding horses to working on the ranch.
In conclusion, cowboy boots are much more than just a fashion statement – they are an essential part of cowboy culture, representing the values and spirit of the people who wear them. Whether you are a cowboy or simply someone who appreciates the beauty and functionality of these classic western boots, there is no denying that they are an important part of American history and a timeless symbol of the West.
]]>I know I'm keen to expand my horse-riding horizons beyond hacking and the odd attempt to do something a little bit more adventurous. There is one thing I haven't tried yet and whilst it intrigues me, to tell the truth, it's doubtful I will ever actually try it because quite frankly the thought of it scares me!
Now, what on earth can be scarier than sitting on a large creature with a mind of its own? Well, how about sitting behind one on a carriage and trying to control it from the end of a very long pair of reins?… Maximum respect to all carriage drivers out there!
The stable yard I frequent started life as a carriage driving centre, and there's something just so majestic about seeing someone aloft their carriage, being pulled along by their trusty steed(s). Multiply that into a team of eight large, stunning Clydesdale horses - as per a rather well-known brewery company - and the result is something jaw-droppingly spectacular.
Carriage driving as a sport and pastime has been popular for centuries with evidence of it dating back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Greece. The first versions of carriages would have been what we know as chariots.
The chariot was a fast, light, open, two-wheeled cart drawn by two or more horses that were hitched side by side, and was basically just a floor with a waist-high guard at the front and sides. They were initially used for ancient warfare during the Bronze and Iron Ages, then eventually for travel, processions, games and races, evolving into the carriages we are familiar with today.
Of course, if we're talking about horse-drawn chariots then we can't possibly miss out the Romans. Here's a little bit of history for you; Romans called them "carpentum," and they were used for transportation and as a status symbol. The carpentum was a two-wheeled vehicle typically pulled by a team of horses. It was used by high-ranking officials and wealthy citizens for travel within the city and for travel to and from the countryside. It was also used in ceremonies and parades, as well as for the transportation of goods. They were also used for some rather dubious entertainment purposes in wild chariot races but let's not dwell on that. Some were fitted with a folding hood to protect their passengers from the sun or rain.
Apparently, the Roman carriages were not as refined as those which were also being used by now by the wealthy in Greece, or Egypt.
Fast forward a few centuries and we find horse-drawn carriages being used for transporting people, goods and also for advertising when many companies used them to deliver their products. The aforementioned iconic Clydesdales started being used for advertising campaigns for their famous brand in the 1930s. I do love a Clydesdale horse. At one point in time, I looked after one. I can vouch for their strength. Just ask me about the time he took off with me through a forest. It was like trying to pull up a locomotive. The only reason I didn't fall off going around the many bends was his sheer size – thankfully there was a lot to sit on! I digress …
Horse carriage driving is a beautiful and historic tradition that dates back centuries. The sight of a horse-drawn carriage on a city street is something to behold. The driver makes it look easy – but for those of us who know the slightest thing about horses – we know it's a lot of work!
I'm writing this in the UK. We Brits love a bit of pomp and ceremony that includes horses and carriages. However, I have to admit to a guilty pleasure of watching any televised processions to spot that one horse that decides to have its moment during the proceedings. Guaranteed there's always one! I remember clearly one procession about 4 years ago with a grey horse right at the front, in front of the main carriage. Well, he decided to be THE star of the show that day. I swear the rider must still be saddle-sore. Why walk when you can prance? Then, you can go sideways instead of straight on, and almost take out a standing policeman on guard along the way with your hindquarters - were clearly the thoughts of this pony. I felt for the carriage driver immediately behind! I truly take my hat off to them in these sorts of situations. How on earth they keep control of the horses and their own composure has me in utter awe.
So, here's to all the carriage drivers out there! Whilst we don't offer actual carriages here at Blackjack Saddles – we do have a selection of driving bits and harnesses. Just search for "driving" in our search bar to see a whole array of items. Plus of course, we have plenty of clothing, hats, saddles, gloves etc. etc. As ever, shout if you need any help.

I’ve heard this debate a few times. Some people believe Western saddles are more comfortable for the horse and rider. Others think an English style saddle is best.
The truth is, so long as your saddle fits properly and is suited to your main riding activity, any saddle should be fine. Western saddles aren’t “better” than English saddles and vice versa. As we all know, if your horse is comfortable and happy that’s half the battle! Then of course, you - the rider, needs to be equally as comfortable.
So what is the main difference between Western and English saddles? We’ve talked about this in previous blogs but to recap quickly, generally speaking, English saddles are good for jumping / hunting / hacking. Western saddles, being designed specifically for longer spells in the saddle, are more suitable for ranch work, long trail rides and barrel racing. Not that the rider spends long spells of time in the saddle whilst barrel racing - but they definitely need something mega secure to sit on! I’m in awe of barrel racers. One sudden spook on a quiet hack and I might be on the ground…. so how you guys stay on and bend round those barrels at astonishing speed is completely beyond me!
I digress. It all comes down to personal preference. This blog writer is based in the UK and most of her riding career has been spent in English general purpose saddles. However, I have had the good fortune to try the western style of riding and saddles. It was a few years ago, admittedly, but I’d love to try it again.
My most vivid recollection of the experience was sinking into what looked like an extraordinarily large, very ornate saddle with a horn at the front. Hurrah - something to hold on to and oh boy was that saddle comfortable! It’s safe to say my western riding style needs a bit of work but it’s definitely something I’d like to revisit one day.
We had a western riding instructor that day and I’m not sure who was more confused - me or the horse, or said instructor with our attempts at neck reining and one-handed riding. Very different to our slightly, dare I say it (just my personal thoughts here) stiff and bolt upright style of riding in the UK. I was forever being told to “sit up” in my early horse riding days. As well as “don’t forget to breathe!” Concentrating on staying on board and moving the horse at the same time, remembering where my legs, heels, arms and hands were all meant to be simultaneously was all a bit much for me. Thankfully I have improved and breathe more normally now! (Although I do have the odd relapse depending on what’s happening in my four legged friend’s head at the time).
With an artistic background, something I especially love about Western saddles as opposed to English ones, is the huge variety of styles available and the absolutely stunning craftsmanship and design detail that is present in so many of them. The bigger surface area of the western saddle (designed specifically to spread the rider’s weight over the horse’s back) is the perfect place for design detail.
Of course you’ll know all this if you’re already familiar with western saddles, but for any readers who aren’t - you should take a look at our western saddles range on our website. Prepare to be amazed just how many styles there are to choose from! In fact I’d suggest grabbing a coffee, putting up the “do not disturb” sign and finding a comfortable chair to start your browsing.
To sum up, there is no saddle type that is better than another. It just needs to fit the horse and rider properly and be suitable for its end use. Plus of course be to your taste. To use one of my favourite phrases at the moment just “do you.”
As usual if you want any advice then just shout. We’re here to help you and just a phone call away!

When riding a horse, a person is able to explore the world in a way that is not possible on foot or in a car. A horse can take a rider through forests, over hills, and across streams, and the experience of traveling through the natural world on the back of a powerful animal can be exhilarating.
Another reason why people love riding horses is the sense of connection and bond that can develop between a rider and their horse. Horses are intelligent and sensitive animals, and they are able to form strong bonds with their riders. The trust and understanding that develops between a horse and its rider can be a source of great joy and fulfillment for both parties.
Riding horses can also be a great way to improve physical health and fitness. Horse riding is a full-body workout that engages the core, legs, and upper body, and it can provide a cardiovascular workout that can help to improve cardiovascular health and endurance. In addition, horse riding can also help to improve balance, coordination, and flexibility, making it a great activity for people of all ages.
Another reason why people love riding horses is the sense of accomplishment and achievement that comes from learning new skills and techniques. Horse riding is a complex and challenging activity that requires a person to learn a variety of skills, such as how to control the horse's speed and direction, how to communicate with the horse, and how to perform various riding techniques. As a person learns and masters these skills, they can feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that can be deeply satisfying.
Finally, many people love riding horses simply because it is a fun and enjoyable activity. Horse riding offers a sense of excitement and thrill that can be hard to find in other forms of recreation, and the experience of riding a horse can be both thrilling and relaxing at the same time.
In conclusion, there are many reasons why people love riding horses. Some people are drawn to the sense of freedom and adventure that comes from riding a horse, while others are attracted to the bond and connection that can develop between a rider and their horse. Riding horses can also provide physical health benefits, a sense of accomplishment, and simply be a fun and enjoyable activity. These reasons, among others, are why people love riding horses so much.

English saddles are typically smaller and lighter than Western saddles, and they have a flatter seat and smaller pommel (the front of the saddle). They are often made from leather or synthetic materials, and they typically have a more streamlined and refined appearance than Western saddles.
Western saddles, on the other hand, are typically larger and heavier than English saddles. They have a deeper seat and a higher pommel, and they are often made from heavier materials such as leather or rawhide. Western saddles are designed to provide more support and stability for the rider, and they often have additional features such as horn and cantle (the back of the saddle) for securing the rider's feet and legs.
Another key difference between English and Western saddles is the way they are used. English saddles are typically used for activities such as dressage, jumping, and cross-country riding, where the horse and rider need to be able to move quickly and smoothly. Western saddles, on the other hand, are typically used for activities such as rodeos, trail riding, and cattle work, where the horse and rider need to be able to handle rough terrain and quick changes in direction.
In terms of fit and comfort, English and Western saddles also have some notable differences. English saddles are designed to be more streamlined and fitted to the horse's back, and they often require the use of a saddle pad to provide additional cushioning. Western saddles, on the other hand, are designed to be more forgiving and comfortable for the horse, and they often have additional padding built into the seat and skirts of the saddle.
Another important difference between English and Western saddles is the type of equipment and accessories that are used with them. English saddles typically use a bridle and reins for controlling the horse, and the rider's feet are typically placed in stirrups that are attached to the saddle. Western saddles, on the other hand, often use a hackamore (a type of headgear that uses pressure on the horse's nose and jaw rather than a bit) and reins, and the rider's feet are often placed in stirrups that are hung from the saddle rather than attached to it.
In conclusion, English and Western saddles are two of the most common types of horse saddles, and they are designed for different types of riding activities. English saddles are typically smaller, lighter, and more refined in appearance, and they are used for activities such as dressage and jumping. Western saddles are typically larger, heavier, and more rugged in appearance, and they are used for activities such as rodeos and trail riding. Both types of saddles have their own unique features and advantages, and the best choice of saddle often depends on the specific needs and preferences of the horse and rider.
]]>The first step in fitting a saddle is to measure your horse. To do this, you will need a flexible tape measure and someone to help you. Start by measuring your horse's girth, which is the widest part of its chest. This measurement is taken just behind the front legs and should be taken at the level of the saddle. Make sure that the tape measure is snug but not too tight, and record the measurement.
Next, measure your horse's withers, which are the highest point of its shoulder blades. The withers are an important point of reference when fitting a saddle because they determine the height of the saddle. To measure the withers, stand next to your horse and place the tape measure at the base of the neck, where it meets the shoulder. Measure up to the highest point of the withers and record the measurement.
Once you have these two measurements, you can use them to determine the size and type of saddle that will best fit your horse. Saddle sizes are typically based on the width of the tree, which is the internal frame of the saddle. A tree that is too wide for your horse's girth measurement can cause discomfort and rubbing, while a tree that is too narrow can put pressure on your horse's spine. The height of the saddle is determined by the length of the panels, which are the cushioned part of the saddle that make contact with your horse's back. A saddle with too-short panels will not provide enough support for your horse, while a saddle with too-long panels can interfere with its movement.
Once you have selected a saddle that is the appropriate size and type for your horse, the next step is to position it properly on its back. To do this, you will need to lift the saddle onto your horse's back and adjust its position until it is centered and balanced. The front of the saddle should be positioned just behind the withers, and the cantle (the back of the saddle) should be centered over the horse's loins. The stirrup leathers should hang straight down, and the pommel (the front of the saddle) should not be too high or too low.
Once the saddle is in position, check that it is level by placing a spirit level on the seat. The saddle should be level from front to back and from side to side. If the saddle is not level, it can cause discomfort and imbalance for your horse. Adjust the position of the saddle until it is level, and then check the fit by running your hand along your horse's back. The saddle should not be too tight or too loose, and it should not cause any rubbing or chafing.
To ensure that your horse stays comfortable during rides, it is important to check the fit of the saddle regularly. Over time, a horse's body can change shape and size, and this can affect the fit of the saddle. Check the fit of the saddle before each ride, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that it is properly positioned and comfortable for your horse.
In conclusion, fitting a saddle to your horse is a crucial step in ensuring that it is comfortable and well-supported during rides. By measuring your horse's girth and withers, selecting the appropriate size and type of saddle, and properly positioning and checking the fit of the saddle, you can ensure that your horse

]]>Are you a budding Show Jumper?
Read on for some fun facts about show jumping. And if you need some lovely new tack and accessories for your next competition, we'll add links to some of our products at the end of the blog. You'll look like absolute winners in the arena even if you don't go home with a rosette!
Origins of Show Jumping
The actual origins of showjumping are a little hazy - but our research has found a couple of theories. One such theory is that it all started in Elizabethan times with large horses and small jockeys competing and scaling obstacles measuring at least 115 cm in height. In gallop. Yes, you read that right. In gallop. That makes this author truly wince. She's amazed if she can approach and clear a jump, and stay onboard at a nice, sedate canter. In truth, she'd rather do it in trot. Over a trotting pole. Oh hey, who is she kidding? She'd rather not do it at all, and go off for a lovely trail ride instead - leaving the scary jumping stuff to you brave people who love it!
But back to the story ... The next theory is that show jumping came into force with the rise of fox hunting in the 18th century in England. Until then, there really hadn't been much need for horses to jump. However, the boundaries and fencing on the land used for hunting required horses that were capable of jumping such obstacles.
Meanwhile, in early horse shows in France, the competitors would go away across country to jump, after taking part in a parade. This frustrated the spectators because they couldn't see the jumping. So jumping was introduced into arenas so that those spectators could actually, well, spectate!
Ever heard of "lepping"?
Soon jumping became known as "lepping." Then, in 1869, when jumping appeared at the Dublin Horse show it was known as "horse leaping." Allegedly it then took 15 years to reach Britain, where, still known as "lepping," competitions became popular, and by 1900 most of the more important shows included lepping classes.
Now ... have you heard of Captain Federico Caprilli? He was an Italian riding instructor who influenced the world of jumping. He advocated that the rider employ a forward position with shorter stirrups. This led to the style of show jumping we recognise today where the rider is in a forward position, up and out of the saddle, whilst clearing the obstacle. This allows the horse to move freely over the jump and keep its balance.
Interestingly, early competitions had little to no rules. However, in 1923 a meeting was arranged, which led to the BSJA (British Show Jumping Association) being formed in 1925. In the United States, the American Horse Shows Association was formed in 1917, which now is known as the United States Equestrian Federation. And we now have rules!
It's really quite something to see a horse and rider working together as one, clearing the jumps with apparent ease. Thus it's a hugely popular sport both for riders and spectators.
So, if you're inspired, and you think that you need some smart new equipment for your show jumping, then take a look at our Annice +4 Platinum Close Contact saddle.
